- Diagnostic Steps; Step 1. Started vehicle and verified check engine light is on, also air bag fault light on B0085 left front side impact sensor open. Step 2. Performed code scan and found multiple codes stored in engine control module- P0420 catalyst efficiency, P2645 intake rocker solenoid control valve control circuit, P2646 intake rocker solenoid control valve stuck off, P305F Dual battery control module performance. Checked oil condition and found engine oil very dark and appears burnt- oil life is at 90% service due in 2,000 miles according to sticker. Step 3. Using scan tool functions, commanded intake rocker control solenoid and found solenoid inoperative. Using volt meter checked control power and ground when commanded on, found both good. Step 4. Removed intake rocker control solenoid, using power probe manually commanded solenoid and solenoid does not function. Step 5. Using volt meter checked ohm resistance of solenoid terminals 1 and 2, found ohm reading not within specification 40 ohms – specification is between 10-30 ohms. Terminals 3 and 4 around 20 ohms. Correction – Recommend replacing intake rocker control solenoid and perform engine oil restoration service due to oil condition. Recommend further diagnosis for P0420 and P0305F.
- Performed a visual Inspection and prepared an estimate for parts and labor.
- Remove and replace rocker arm control solenoid
- Add Engine Performance Restoration Additive To Engine Oil. Ran vehicle @1200 RPM for 20 Minutes. Drained engine oil. Removed and replaced engine oil filter Refilled engine oil, and added BG MOA additive to the engine oil.
- Road tested vehicle. During road test the check engine light came on. Scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. Found powertrain control module code P0420 (catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 1). Recommend replacement of bank 1 catalytic converter assembly and retest. No further problem found with the rocker arm system.
